Groundhog Day

It is the second of February again: Groundhog Day. Wiarton Willie has failed to see his shadow, so according to this weather analyzing rodent we are getting an early Spring! :-O)

That means that instead of hiding in his burrow, Wiarton Willie has all the time in the world for some driving around town.

Groundhog Day

For all you people who are not familiar with the tradition:

This tradition is celebrated in Canada and the USA on February 2. On this day people gather to see a groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, marmot or ground squirrel. Why? If it emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If it does see its shadow it is scared so much that it will not come out of its burrow for another six weeks – a period which magically coincides with a prolonged period of winter.

Or something like that.

Like the movie with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell?

or the new 15th Anniversary edition (2008):

The soundtrack is pretty good too.

All we have to do now is shovel away the 30-40 cm of snow that was dumped on us yesterday, and wait ’till Spring arrives…
